Florentina's husband speaks out

Have just received this article via Florina from Libertatea - an interview with Florentina Cîrstea's husband who makes some very valid points to be added to the long list for her defence (please scroll down for English translation):

Plange ca un copil, face treburile unei femei şi zi de zi merge la serviciu pentru a avea din ce trăi. Aşa se scurg zilele din viaţa lui Dan Cirstea (36 de ani), soţul asistentei arestate pentru moartea celor şase bebeluşi prinşi captivi in flăcările care au distrus, pe 16 august, salonul de Terapie Intensivă de la Maternitatea Giuleşti, din Capitală. În exclusivitate pentru Libertatea, omul a acceptat să-şi spună povestea vieţii.



Revolta, mânia şi furia şi-au pus adânc amprenta pe sufletul lui Dan Cîrstea de când soţia lui, Florentina, se află în arest. “Am inima zdrobită. În cei 14 ani de când suntem împreună n-am fost niciodată despărţiţi. Am iubit-o din prima clipă, a fost dragoste la prima vedere. Femeia asta e tot ce am mai scump pe lume, nu pot trăi fără ea”, ne povesteşte bărbatul. În apartamentul său din Bucureşti, unde a fost vizitat de reporterii Libertăţii. Dan e înconjurat de sutele de fotografii din care îi zâmbeşte veselă Florentina.

Sunt căsătoriţi de 14 ani

Bărbatul se teme că mulţi români nu înţeleg ce s-a întâmplat cu adevărat la maternitate, aşa că nu vrea să se lase fotografiat sau să spună prea multe lucruri despre familia lui, de teamă că ar avea de suferit cu toţii.

“Eram doi copii când ne-am cunoscut, dar am ştiut că ea este cea lângă care vreau să-mi petrec restul zilelor. La scurt timp după ce ne-am căsătorit l-am avut pe Laur. Alţii, la vârsta aceea, vor să-şi trăiască viaţa (cum se spune), să se plimbe prin diferite locuri din lume. Noi ne-am dorit însă o familie, iar copilul ăsta, rodul iubirii noastre, e sufletul Florentinei. Aşa cum îşi iubeşte fiul, aşa îi iubea şi pe copilaşii aceia de care avea grijă la spital”, îşi aminteşte Dan cu privirea aţintită pe o fotografie în care soţia lui ţine în braţe un bebeluş.

Discuţia ne e întreruptă de mama şi de fiul Florentinei, care se întorc de la şcoală. Ca un părinte iubitor, Dan îşi îmbrăţişează băiatul şi-l întreabă cum a decurs ziua. După discuţia cu fiul său, soţul asistentei îşi reia mărturisirile.

Era pasionată de munca ei

“Serviciul era totul pentru ea. Venea seara acasă şi-mi povestea de câte un copilaş pe care îl avea în grijă, apoi mai stătea încă o oră-două la telefon cu părinţii micuţilor sau cu colegele şi se consultau pe anumite cazuri. Sunt părinţi ai unor copii născuţi la Giuleşti care o sună şi acum. Cum o pot acuza oamenii că şi-a neglijat serviciul, cum aţi găsit-o tocmai pe ea vinovată? Dacă Florentina era acolo când a izbucnit incendiul, ardea alături de copilaşii aceia şi tot nu îi lăsa singuri. Dacă scotea incubatoarele cu bebeluşi din salon şi unul dintre aceştia păţea ceva, tot ea era acuzată, nu? Ştie cineva în câte prize e băgat un asemenea incubator? Chiar dacă reuşea să le deconecteze, acelea nu ar mai fi funcţionat, iar bebeluşii nu mai primeau oxigen”, a răbufnit Dan Cîrstea.

A împlinit 35 de ani în arest

Cuvintele i se opresc din cauza lacrimilor care-i şiroiesc pe obraji, pecetluindu- i parcă buzele. După minute bune, ia în mână o fotografie şi spune: “Acesta e finuţul nostru... Trebuia să fie, însă nu l-am mai putut boteza pentru că pe Florentina... Ea şi-a dorit enorm să fie naşa acestui copil, dar s-a întâmplat nenorocirea şi n-a mai apucat să se bucure şi ea. Pe 31 august a fost ziua ei de naştere, a împlinit 35 de ani, dar i-a petrecut în arest în loc să fie aici, acasă, cu noi”, şi-a încheiat bărbatul povestea.

«Era înnebunită după copii»

"Ce poate fi mai greu pentru o mamă decât să-şi vadă copilul închis pe nedrept? Dacă îmi bagă fata la puşcărie, eu mă omor”, a rostit îndurerată mama Florentinei Cîrstea. “Eu n-am văzut pe cineva mai dedicat decât Florentina, era înnebunită după copii... Iar acum, lumea o arată cu degetul spunând că ea e vinovată. Asta nu e dreptate”, a declarat femeia.

Şase bebeluşi au murit

Şase bebeluşi au pierit în urma incendiului de pe 16 august de la Maternitatea Giuleşti din Capitală, provocat de un scurtcircuit la o priză. Primele cercetări au arătat că asistenta Florentina Cîrstea, cea care îi îngrijea pe micuţi, a lipsit 12 minute din salon. Cîrstea a fost singura arestată, iar un alt angajat e cercetat în stare de libertate pentru ucidere din culpă şi vătămare corporală gravă din culpă.

Nu trebuia să fie singură în salon

Dan Cîrstea se întreabă de ce în ziua tragediei, şi nu numai, soţia lui era singură la salonul de Terapie Intensivă, în condiţiile în care în fişa postului scrie clar că ea “asigură îngrijirea a 10-13 pacienţi şi are în subordine 1-2 asistente debutante şi 1-2 infirmiere”.



“Unde erau asistentele şi infirmierele?”, se întreabă soţul Florentinei. “Tot în fişa postului se arată că asistenta medicală «asigură şi răspunde de sterilizarea prin fierbere sau la un aparat special din oficiu, a linguriţelor, a biberoanelor, a tetinelor şi a sondelor Nelaton»... Deci soţia mea trebuia să meargă să sterilizeze ustensilele pentru hrana bebeluşilor, dar oficiul de sterilizare este în capătul celălalt al culoarului. Atunci, bebeluşii nu rămâneau singuri? Dar în dimineaţa cu pricina, când Florentina a fost chemată în sala de naştere pentru a ajuta la resuscitarea unui nou-născut?! Nu s-a mai gândit nimeni că bebeluşii de la Terapie Intensivă rămân singuri, nimeni nu s-a gândit că s-ar putea întâmpla aşa ceva?”, întreabă revoltat Dan Cîrstea.

He cries like a child, works in the house and goes to work to be able to make ends meet. This is how the days go by for Dan Cîrstea (36 years old) the husband of the assistant arrested for the deaths of the six babies, captive by the flames that destroyed the intensive therapy ward at the Giulesti maternity. For Libertatea the man accepted to tell us his story

Revolt, anger, fury have left their imprint on the soul of Dan Cîrstea since Florentina was arrested." My heart is broken. We've never been separated in the 14 years since we've been together. I loved her from the moment I saw her, it was love at first sight. This woman is what I have the dearest in this world, I cannot live without her" he says.

Dan is surrounded by hundreds of pictures of a smiling Florentina.

The man fears that there are a great many people who do not understand what really happened at the maternity and does not want to be photographed because he fears that his family might suffer.

"We were two children when we met, but I knew she was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Shortly after we married we had our son, Laur. Others, at our age want to live their lives, want to travel; we wanted a family and this child is the gift of our love., he is Florentina's soul. She loves our son as much as she loved the babies she was taking care of at the hospital" remembers Dan, showing us a picture of Florentina holding a baby.

The discussion is interrupted by Florentina's mother bringing Laur back from school. Lovingly, Dan hugs his son and asks him about school. Then, he continues his story.

She was passionate about her work

"The job was everything to her. She would come home and tell me about a baby she was taking care of and then, she would talk for an hour or two with the parents of the little ones or with her colleagues. There are parents whose children were born at Giulesti that still even today call her. How can she be accused of neglecting her job, how is icould you have found her guilty? If Florentina had been there when the fire started, she would have burned with the children and would not have left them there. If she had managed to take the incubators out and something  happened  to one of them, she would  again have been found guilty, right? Does any one know how many outlets  an incubator is attached to? Even if she had managed to disconnect them the babies would have died through of lack of oxygen."

He stops while tears run down his face. After a while he shows us a picture:"This is our godson.. should have been our godson but we couldn't do it after all because Florentina... She wanted so much to be his godmother but the tragedy happened. Her birthday was on August 31, she is 35 but instead of spending it with us she had to be arrested."

"What can be worse for a mother than to see her child locked up when she is not guilty? If she goes to prison I'll kill myself"  says the grieving mother. "I have never seen anyone more dedicated than Florentina; she was crazy about the children and now, people point the finger at her saying she is guilty. This is not right," she says.

Six babies died following the Aug. 16 accident at the Giulesti maternity caused by a shortcircuit .The first investigations show that Florentina Cirstea, who was taking care of the 12 babies, was the only one arrested and another employee is investigated while free.

Dan Cirstea asks why the day of the tragedy, and not only that day, his wife was the only one working in the intensive therapy ward since the job description mentioned that the assistant "insures the care of 10-13 patients and has in her subordination 1-2 practice assistants (?) and 1-2 "infirmiere".

"Where are the assistants and the infirmieres?" asks Florentina's husband. The description of her job also states the the medical assistant "insures and is responsible for the sterilization  through boiling via a special unit in the office spoons, milk bottles, pacifiers and Nelaton sondes."

"So, my wife had to go to sterilize the utensils for feeding the babies, BUT the sterilization office was at the other end of the hallway. Weren't the babies left unsupervised then? How about that same morning when Florentina was called to the birth ward (sala de nastere) to help with the resuscitation of a new-born? Didn't anybody think that those babies in the Intensive therapy ward were left alone, unsupervised and something could happen?" Dan Cirstea angrily asks.

Thank you again, dear Florina.

Three extremely valid points to add to the list of the defence - one, that had she been there and tried to move the incubators out, the babies would have died from lack of oxygen when the incubators were unplugged, and had that been the case she would have been found guilty of that too. But in any case, says her husband, she would not have left the babies there and would have burnt with them. The second point - the number of staff on duty - see her contract photographed above. And number three: she was obliged to leave the babies several times during her shift in order to sterilise feeding equipment, dummies, sondes etc and in that time, the babies had to be left unsupervised in the absence of adequate staffing rotas... she was also called away to assist at a birth. What if the fire had happened then? Or when she was sterilising, in an office at the end of the hall? An excellent article (despite the Mills and Boon bits!!) - Florentina is a PERSON with a FAMILY and with a HEART, is the essence of this article. Take heed. Again and again I repeat myself: Florentina Cîrstea should not be in jail and is NOT GUILTY of involuntary manslaughter and grievous bodily harm. I am glad to have had this insight into her life for we have been holding her hand from here since the day of her arrest.

We must not stop fighting for Florentina, for if we do, we are condoning everything in Romania that is rotten from the health service to the justice system.

I totally agree that we have to lend our voices next to balbeck, pardaf and start some kind of grass-root movement in her defense. i would also recommend the blog of cristina bazavan who had a converstion with Mr. Dan Cirsttea, Florentina's husband
