Cristina Lapis - The Bear Minimum
Cristina Lapis is an incredible woman - the Brigitte Bardot of Roumania. Owner of the shelter 'Milioane de Prieteni' (Millions of Friends) Association where there are currently 800 dogs marvellously and lovingly cared for, she is also founder of LiBearTy in Brasov, a shelter for bears in danger. Some have been wounded by hunters, and others, far worse, have been abused by so-called human beings, though these people do not deserve any such title connected to humanity. See exclusive interview.
The bears of Brasov have multiplied since the fall of Ceausescu (he banned bear-hunting to everyone but himself) and there are currently said to be 6,000 in the wild. Roumania has the largest number of bears in Europe today. Here's a marvellous video from Youtube. Be warned though, if you're a soppy animal lover like meself, you may need kleenex at the ready. Cristina Lapis is also interviewed.
Cristina Lapis's bear sanctuary, LiBearTy, allows her bears to roam freely and safely in enclosures within nearly 160 hectares. WSPA (registered charity 1081849) and Milioane de Prieteni decided to create the sanctuary after investigations highlighted the misery of Roumania's captive bears, estimated at around 50 in total. Although the sanctuary did not officially open until June 2007, 20 of Roumania’s captive bears have already been rescued and moved to their new home. See HERE for more info on LiBearTy and HERE for news and updates on individual bears...my goodness, this woman deserves a medal and far more acknowledgement for all the work she has done for animal rights, conditions and public awareness.

Don't panic. I won't adopt a bear, though how I'd love to open a refuge! It may possibly ruin Brigitte's parquet, though, and my Floreascan neighbours wouldn't approve. Rosie is enough for now....
