Queen Marie of Rumania

Hi Everyone, My friend Mary sent me the link that you will find on the right of this page: Queen Marie - My Country, Rumania. It's a gorgeous site and I'm thrilled to have read it. At last, I have found a text, written by a fellow compatriot, who loved it here, too - no, but reeeeeeally loved it. She made it her own, she explored and protected and cherished it to the limit. Even during two years exile she yearned to come 'home', to feel Romanian soil under her feet once more, take her horse and gallop across the sands at Mamaia,... [Lire la suite]

Weekly Update

Dear Everyone, I don't believe it!!!! I'd just finished writing this update, a really long one with plenty of description and detail, when the computer crashed and I lost the whole thing. I'm afraid I can't be bothered to do it all again, so here it is in brief: Monday-Friday: work as usual. Week made more enjoyable by a visit from Lucia with her fabulous cake on Monday, and lunch with Aura on Thursday. Wish we had time to do that more often. Friday evening: National Theatre (see photos in Bucharest Theatre album) with... [Lire la suite]

Weekly Update

Dear Everyone, Another mad week sped by, leaving me a little dizzy and wondering how to hold on tightly to every second, imprint all the images on my memory, never let them go. It's only February, but it feels like the next 7 months are going to just fly, and I can't bear it. You already read about my Reiki session etc in the last message. What else can I tell you? I had a weekend of parks and open air! Saturday, on a determined mission to find theatre tickets to a comedy for Lucia, George and I, Rosie and I walked our hooves... [Lire la suite]

Snow again!

Dear All, Guess what? Snow is falling by the bucket load outside. This morning it was springtime, and in just one day we're catapulted back to winter again. 15cm of white powdery stuff already, apparently, but I didn't stop long enough to measure it. Rosie and I walked Lucia as far as str. Toamnei this evening and had to turn back as the wind was so strong poor little dog couldn't go any further. Sooooooo cold. Of course, I don't have to tell you that Bucharest has ground to a halt. The traffic is dreadful and the girls and I have... [Lire la suite]

Weekly Update

Dear Everyone, It's been a marvellous seven days here in Bucharest. I hope you're all well, too wherever you are. The slush has finally vanished, leaving dodgy looking stains on tarmac and pavements, but one can see the holes now before it's too late! It's become very cold once again, and driving home this evening with Oana and her Gaby, it was -1° outside. Brrr! Still unable to shed the winter coat which has died a death of Rosie fur and excited paw prints from the park opposite the French Institute, and still impossible to go out... [Lire la suite]

Weekly Update

Dear Everyone, How are you? It's been a busy week here that just flew by. It's hard to remember what I've been up to! The major point I guess was that BC asked me to stay another term. That means losing my month's holiday in April and working until mid-July. After a lot of agonising, cogitating, talks with Lucia, Lidia and Gaby, I decided to accept. I'm not at all sure I've done the right thing for my sanity, but it's certainly the right thing for my pocket. I thus had my observed class last Friday and I'm waiting to see my Line... Weekly Update

Dear Everyone, Rosie and I have just come back from a lovely weekend with Lidia and Marian (see album 'Rosie'). It was Rosie's first holiday and was surely the best time of her life to date! The train journey to Brasov was new for her and she was very scared indeed, but once we were home with Lidia and Marian, she made herself perfectly comfortable as if she'd been there for ages. She fell in love with Marian and absolutely adored Lidia. Marian took her out for walks, Lidia cuddled and played with her...and then on Saturday we met... [Lire la suite]

A Dacian's Prayer by Eminescu

A little culture for you - one of Eminescu's glorious poems translated beautifully, at last, into English - Bravo, Dle. Popescu! A DACIAN'S PRAYER -Eminescu-When death did not exist, nor yet eternity,  Before the seed of life had first set living free,  When yesterday was nothing, and time had not begun,  And one included all things, and all was less than one,  When sun and moon and sky, the stars, the spinning earth  Were still part of the things that had not come to birth,  And You quite lonely... Weekly Update

Dear Everyone, It was a busy week that was, what with getting Rosie, having her settle in, the emotion of it all, dinner at Ruth's with Mary (lovely evening), work and all sorts of other social engagements and things to do and be done. The snow is gradually melting, turning Bucharest into a land of slush and mud - quite foul, but it's still my city and I love it. My 'fireman' boots are at last put to good use and they look like I've been wading through countryside! Walking around Bucharest has become dangerous yet again in the... [Lire la suite]

Dear All, I've done something I vowed I'd never do - I've adopted a dog. She was at the refuge in Glina (see S.O.S. message posted below), and when I saw her photo, I couldn't help it. I just had to save her. I must be completely mad (well, we knew that!) but I couldn't just leave her there, pretend I hadn't seen the news reports of what was happening there and pretend I hadn't seen her photo. I've been running round all week trying to convince people to adopt a dog and the reply was often 'have you taken one?' - so rather than be... [Lire la suite]
