UPDATE 1-Thousands of Romanians protest austerity measures By Luiza Ilie and Ioana Patran BUCHAREST, May 19 (Reuters) - One of the largest mass protests since the fall of Communism in 1989 hit Bucharest on Wednesday over deep government spending cuts, casting doubt on Romania's ability to meet its IMF loan commitments. how did it happen and how can it be?

My dears, I have been gone for a year in July - the longest in ten years that I haven't been back to the country of my heart. In that time, have things changed so much? 'Yes', my friends tell me, 'it's changed so much you wouldn't recognise the atmosphere in the streets. People look desperate again, as they did before 89. They are afraid of the future. Pale, empty eyed or rage-filled. The smiles that were there for a while are gone. People keep their heads down and walk straight on. It's as if we are waiting for something to happen... Tolerance reaches its peak

Is the country of my heart marching towards a revolution? The government's austerity measures are worse than unacceptable. They are intolerable. They are inhuman, in a country where the average pension is 350 euros a month but the cost of living much the same these days as here in Paris or London. How are people supposed to live? Received this afternoon. Please read it as I wipe my eyes. I didn't understand every word - but no need. The message is clear and the images blatent. Beautifully written and tragic. Tragic and true. Thank you for sending it on, iubita mea xox : ROSTUL Când te desparţi din vina ta, încerci o vreme să te lupţi cu ireversibilul, îţi dai seama că n-are sens, te lamentezi de formă şi renunţi. Când te desparţi din vina celuilalt, ai nevoie de o perioadă de timp ca să înţelegi ce s-a întâmplat. Iei povestea de la capăt, pas cu pas... [Lire la suite]

Good grief!! Heaven forfend!! Though one shouldn't be surprised at such a suggestion from Vanghelie (see below) since Elena Basescu and Gigi B are representing Roumania in Europe anyway - things couldn't get much worse. Udrea for Prime Minister? What is the man smoking?!! The country of my heart seems to be going to the maidanezi and look what's happening to them, according to the Scottish Herald. What the hell is going on? Not content with the ridiculous violet flame affair, things go from the sublime to the darn right insulting.... [Lire la suite]
