Srebrenica Massacre Remembered
by Kathryn Hadley,Sunday
marked the 15th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, on July 11th,
1995, when the town was attacked by Bosnian Serb forces under the

Violet, the woman who almost changed history
In 1926-7, three attempts were made on the life of Mussolini. Unfortunately, they all failed and the fascist regime used them to crack down harder than hard on all internal opposition. Violet Gibson came the closest to killing the dictator, shooting him on the nose at short range in the Campidoglio Square in central Rome in 1926. Another inch and history may have been completely different and changed forever.
Poor Violet failed in her quest to alter history but her own fate was sealed. She was locked up for the rest of her days,... [Lire la suite]

Shoes on the Danube
Evocative and deeply touching, this memorial has, I think, broken my heart.... Around 20,000 jews were shot dead on the banks of the Danube in Budapest by the Hungarian Arrow Cross party between December 1944 and January 1945. This memorial of iron shoes was erected to them on the Pest side of the river near the parliament buildings in 2005:
Shoes on the Danube Promenade, from Wikipedia
The plaque.
The Shoes on the Danube Promenade is a memorial created by Gyula Pauer and Can Togay on... [Lire la suite]

It's a sign!!
Bravo! In times of recession, wouldn't dough have been better spent financing the rapidly dwindling pensions? Wouldn't Elena Udrea have been wiser saving money on the ridiculous shoes she distributed to the flood victims and give building materials instead...even food would have been handier - and what about the new 3D roadsigns she has come up with that will (or already has) cost 850,000 euros out of the coffers?? A complete finger up at the pensioners looking at that 15% cut in money already earned and deemed illegal by the... [Lire la suite]

From flames to watermelons
These journalists obviously have nothing better to do... (either that, or Geoana really has lost the plot)
This from Bucharest Herald:

It's a miracle!! Vision restored!
Sa razi sau sa te indignezi!!! This from Adevarul, and it is just the tip of the iceberg. There are literally hundreds of these ripoffs going on over periods of what must surely be years. And how wonderful that miracles happen, for in the country of my heart, the blind can read maps with one eye on the television and the lame do the can-can!:

The love of Bucharest
Dear Everyone,
How good it is to know that there are some nice things happening in and concerning Roumania instead of the sad, depressing and intolerable things that happen on a day to day level. What am I talking about? Blogs! Blogs have my attention today!
Out there are people who still care, who still photograph and write about the gems, the jewels, the teardrops and the sighs of a jaded Little Paris, the city of my heart. They take the time, extend their hearts and arms to share their knowledge, thoughts and feelings. We learn... [Lire la suite]

Voronet and its sister sanctuaries
from New York TimesDeep in the Carpathians, Painted Parables
By PETER WORTSMAN
WHEN the Moldavian prince Stephen the Great won his first decisive
victory against the Turks five and a quarter centuries ago, he decided
to mark the occasion with a grand monastery and adorn its walls with
the colorful work of artisans of the day. With his second victory came
another monastery. With the third, yet another.
The result of his victories — 46 in all — was an unprecedented building
spree within the... [Lire la suite]
