English version: "Casa Spiru Haret - a national shame" by Silvia Colfescu

(Photo source) The below article is the latest post from Silvia Colfescu's blog Istorioare Bucurestene,  'Casa Spiru Haret - o rusine nationala' - indeed, it IS a national shame, particularly when you consider it is on the list of protected patrimonial monuments, category B. Written as always from the heart, echoing the pain of the buildings consistently demolished, the people that once loved and lived within them and those today who care and are forced to watch it happening with no ability to... Hala Matache destroyed by thieves. Police say the wind blew the roof off. Yeah, right.

While many of us have had our attention turned elsewhere - in my case, to the plight and subsequent rescue by Vier Pfoten of the horses of Letea Forest - things have been happening in Bucharest... It appears that Hala Matache, the historical 19th century monument whose proposed demolition by City Hall lead to both national and international opposition, flashmobs and went as far as the European Parliament, lost part of its roof on Monday night. I say 'lost' very loosely, and you know very well what I mean. It was, in fact,... [Lire la suite]

Letter from Sarah In Romania to Monica Macovei: The horses of Letea

Letter from Sarah In Romania sent 22nd May to EUP Monica Macovei concerning the horses of Letea, their protection as part of Romania's national heritage and their future, which is far from clear: Dear Ms Macovei, As a British citizen living in France, member of the EU and a close friend to Romania, I am writing in extreme concern regarding the horses of Letea, which are currently in Braila county. I am sure you must be overwhelmed with e-mails of this nature, but please, do bear with me. I fully understand the... [Lire la suite]

Protest in London 26th May for animal rights in Romania. Bravo UK!

Bravo UK! It would be great to see the same protest in Bucharest on the SAME DAY, May 26th, wouldn't it, so that the two countries, their animal-lovers and NGOs may stand together as one in support, consternation and indignance. AFRA has told me that since the appalling news of the treatment of the horses of Letea has become public, the demonstration is now a double whammy - what started out as a demonstration against the pending euthanasia bill targetting the stray dogs of Romania, the protesters will also... English version: Oana Pellea's letter to the political class of Roumania

(Photo source) On Friday, the actress Oana Pellea wrote an exceptional open letter to the 'political class' of Romania, voicing her bitterness and rage at the treatment of the horses of Letea and the complete absence of political reaction despite hundreds and hundreds of calls from Romanians to stop the slaughtering. Her voice is echoed by Romanians living both within the country and beyond, along with non-Romanians besides. It has been published in the newspapers across Romania (see also... [Lire la suite]

Apel pentru caii de la Letea - Oana Pellea

The news this morning is as shocking as it was yesterday... it appears that there are NO legal papers attesting to the fact that the horses belong to these thieves trying to trade them in for 100 lei per head... of course, we already knew that. These mitocani saw an opportunity to make a buck (or a leu) and grabbed it with all the cruelty they could muster up. I repeat THERE ARE NO LEGAL DOCUMENTS PROVING OWNERSHIP. Common, lousy thieves... Please see THIS video from Antena 3. Here is an EXCELLENT open letter seen in... [Lire la suite]
