Letter from Sarah In Romania to Monica Macovei: The horses of Letea

horses_danubeLetter from Sarah In Romania sent 22nd May to EUP Monica Macovei concerning the horses of Letea, their protection as part of Romania's national heritage and their future, which is far from clear:

Dear Ms Macovei,

As a British citizen living in France, member of the EU and a close friend to Romania, I am writing in extreme concern regarding the horses of Letea, which are currently in Braila county.

I am sure you must be overwhelmed with e-mails of this nature, but please, do bear with me. I fully understand the basis of the problem and the real need to preserve Letea Forest. However, the wild horses of the area are the only species of their kind in the world and therefore should be part of Romania’s national heritage and thus on a protected register. I’m afraid the reasons why this is not the case completely surpass my comprehension.

Following the unthinkable cruelty and brutality inflicted on these beautiful animals over a period of three days – I am referring to the beatings, kickings, bludgeoning, starving, lack of water and food for more than 24h, the crowded conditions of their transportation which lead to 4 deaths (one of them a colt found with its stomach ripped open from the hooves of other horses imprisoned with it) – all of which you are, I am sure, aware, the fate of these horses is of the utmost concern. They have returned from hell but where do they go from here?

It is clear that they cannot be returned to their home in the Delta. Those that faked ownership, beat and tortured them and tried to sell them illegally for 100 lei per capita will try again. Besides that, they must eat and will continue to do as they always have – eat the bark of the trees in the forest which caused environmental concern in the first place. There have been suggestions of adoption. I cannot see how this would be viable. The horses are wild, should live in their natural habitat and be left in peace to do so. Apart from anything else, the organisation for such a scheme takes time and time is something the horses simply do not have. They are only to be kept in Braila for two weeks.

Perhaps they could be moved to another region of Romania where their habits would not cause environmental concern? It was done for the bears, so why not for the horses?

This is surely a concern for CEDO, for the horses of Letea are a national treasure and thus, belong to us all. We should be protecting them, preserving them for our children and our childrens’ children. We should be proud of them and, as a whole, we, members of the EU, are responsible for them.

Those that have abused them, lied and cheated to benefit from them, caused such tremendous suffering and pain and in some cases, inflicted death, should be punished and made examples of. Romania’s track record for animal welfare is everything but impressive and it should not be allowed to continue. What is happening in the country of my heart? The demolition of history and patrimony in the capital, the cruel killings (the word ‘euthanasia’ simply cannot be applied when the poor creatures are poisoned, hanged, gassed and beaten to death) of the stray dogs and now the scandalous and frankly grotesque treatment of the horses of Letea make it hard to defend Romania as I try so hard to do.

I implore you, as the most admirable and efficient representative of Romania in the European parliament, to please take this demand seriously and present the future of these horses to CEDO. To lose them would be shameful to Romania and a great loss to the European community as a whole.

Sincerely yours,

Hi Oanita,
No, no answer yet, but a) I don't expect one to be honest and b) I only sent it 4 days ago and that was before the adoption of the horses by VP so perhaps its old news and now considered 'case closed'.
Hope all goes well and that the horses will be free and wild on territory that is safe for them to live in peace, just as they ought.
Hugs and love xox
