Bellu - a far cry from Pta Universitatii
A great sadness tonight to discover that Cristi Paturca's family have decided to have him buried at Bellu. One could not really get further from his wishes to be cremated and have his ashes scattered at Pta Universitatii than to end up at Bellu. It's an honour, yes, and he will doubtless be within strumming distance of Florin Pitis and Valeriu Sterian but it was not what he desired and I am quite horrified that someone's final wishes could be so glibly ridden rough-shod over... It shows that his family really didn't know him at all. I expect the church put the pressure on, too - cremation is not well seen by the Orthodox church.
My greatest sadness is that this denies Cristi Paturca the chance to stick his middle finger up at the Establishment one last time. It denies the bringing together of people at Pta Universitatii to sing and remember what hope felt like, for so many have forgotten. Perhaps it made certain people feel uncomfortable? Who knows. Whatever the reasons, Cristi's final resting place will not be the one he had chosen. As I write this, my heart feels squeezed. I am so sorry.
