CEDO condemns Roumania in 3 new cases concerning detention conditions

jilava_prisonWe already know from reading the papers, stories bouche a l'oreille, personal experience through prison visits or otherwise, that conditions for prisoners in Romanian jails are appalling. It's not that I believe prisoners should have an easy ride. Far from it. But I am thinking there are so many (like Florentina during her incarceration at Rahova) who shouldn't be there in the first place. Pawns thrown behind bars so that the real culprits are allowed to get away, literally, with murder. Whether politically or in the name of a nice fat spaga, we know it happens in cases by the hundreds, whether we like it or not. We read of diseases like HIV and TB being rife in these penitentiaries. How many to a room? Overcrowded beyond belief - in the article below we read that at Jilava there were 50 or so beds for 65-70 inmates in one cell... See HERE for healthcare within the penitentiary system, soit-disant. The very name 'Jilava' makes me shudder and my imagination goes riot. Well, CEDO is charging Romania with the violation of AiudArticles 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment), 8 (right to respect for private and family life) along with some additional ones besides, mostly concerning conditions in detention. If Roumania isn't careful, it will end up with the same name for itself as Turkey on the human rights front - and that will bring with it the very serious risk of being bounced straight out of the EU...

This latest on the three cases from Juridice with an excellent link (must read):

CEDO. Condamnari impotriva Romaniei – 26 octombrie 2010

28 October 2010 - Juridice.ro 240 citiri

Curtea Europeana a Drepturilor Omului a decis marti, 26 octombrie 2010, condamnarea Romaniei in trei noi cauze, potrivit unui comunicat al CEDO.

Este vorba de cauzele:
- Marcu vs. Romania
- Cucolas vs. Romania
- Coman vs. Romania.

Cauzele se refera la conditiile precare din penitenciare.

Please click on the 'comunicat' link to see the press release issued by the registrar of the court on the subject of conditions of detention. It is truly unbelievable that in an EU country in 2010 this could be so. But it is. Another case of knowing full well but doing nothing about it....
