Constitutional Court postpones ruling over Pensions’ Law

Constitutional Court judges yesterday decided to postpone until next week issuing a ruling on opposition parties’ pension law complaints, according to Agerpres. The court will continue debates on October 6 and possibly issue a ruling the same day.
Both National Liberal Party and the Social Democrat Party last week filed complaints challenging both the law’s provisions and the manner in which it was adopted. The complaints came after opposition leaders accused Chamber of Deputies’ Speaker Roberta Anastase of having passed the law illegally, by reporting a number of favourable votes which was two times higher than the number of lawmakers actually present in session. Liberals and Social Democrats had left the session hall in sign of protest that several of their amendments had been rejected. PSD leader Victor Ponta announced recently that if President Traian Basescu promulgates the law, his party will start procedures to impeach the state. If the Constitutional Court accepts the opposition’s complaints, the law will go back to Parliament for more debates and a new vote.
