A flagrant stitch-up

Whatever way you look at it, Florentina's continual incarceration stinks. It stinks of injustice, it stinks of corruption - there is no sense in it, neither legally nor morally...someone at the top, I keep reading in various blogs, comments and opinions has got to the judges. It certainly suits the real culprits to keep Florentina under lock and key, to continue with the condamnation and defamation of her professionalism and character for it keeps the heat and attention off them. So what went on behind those closed doors yesterday?... [Lire la suite]

Florentina Carstea's release denied

The news today is that Simona Parvu's request for Florentina Carstea's release from custody has been denied. I do not understand it, cannot make sense of it...while Dima roams around free as a bird on grounds of health and age, this woman remains behind bars. It is unthinkable, unjust and incomprehensible. This from Cotidianul (translated by me so excuse the prose) Florentina Cârstea remains in custody 'The nurse arrested for the Giulesti Maternity Hospital fire will remain behind bars. The Bucharest Magistrates... [Lire la suite]

Petition for Florentina Carstea

HERE is a petition in support of Florentina Carstea organised by the OAMGMAMR (The Order of Nurses). Please, please do take the time to visit the site, read the letters and comments, perhaps add your own and/or simply sign the petition. Florentina needs all the help we can give her after the inadmissable condamnation of her professionality and character by the press, the seemingly ineffective lawyer she has representing her and the total absence of word from the management of Giulesti Maternity Hospital all of whom should be in her... Dima released, Carstea still in custody - unbelievable

I just woke up to the news that Vasile Dima has been released...and Florentina Carstea is still in custody. I do not understand this, I cannot accept it - it is a travesty of justice and a joke to the whole system of responsibility. While Florentina did her job for 12 years flawlessly and during a 12 minute absence out of a 12h shift, a fire broke out. Why did the fire break out? Because scumbag Dima didn't do his job. He didn't inspect the equipment, he didn't assure fire prevention material, he didn't train the staff in the fire... [Lire la suite]

Vasile Dima arrested at last

And so today, we finally see the arrest of one Vasile Dima, head of maintenance at Giulesti, a far more guilty party than Florentina Carstea, for he was responsible for training staff for evacuation in the event of a fire, the equipment itself, inspections and fire prevention materials... Gross negligence in every one of these tasks listed in his job description, if I am not mistaken. Here is an article from Romania Libera that I have translated so please excuse any linguistic errors: A new arrest concerning Giuleşti : Head of... [Lire la suite]

Giulesti news update

For today's update on Florentina Carstea's arrest and the continuing investigations into the fire at Giulesti Maternity hospital (sic Marius Iacob), please see today's edition of Nine O'Clock at THIS link. The reason given for the arrest is that she kept changing her story. (see 2nd story down)..and frankly, who wouldn't. She knew she was wrong for having left the ward for the twelve minutes quoted (but then again, anyone would have to go to the WC at some point over a 720 minute time period) and she was scared. Very scared. A comment... [Lire la suite]

In support of Florentina (and count me in, too)

(Photo: Antena .ro) Florentina Carstea's arrest on charges of suspected manslaughter and grievous bodily harm, has given way to mass media coverage (most of it unfavourable) in Roumania. Here is a supporting interview, however, from Antenna 1 given by Cristina, a mother whose premature baby was treated by her at a private clinic. Cristina is very saddened (and indignant) that Florentina has been used as a scapegoat in this tragedy and thanks her from the bottom of her heart for all the care she gave her baby. She states that... [Lire la suite]

Florentina Carstea stands alone

(Photo: News 24 de Ore) Florentina Carstea, detained yesterday for 24h, has now been formally placed under preventive arrest for 29 days without bail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and grievous bodily harm, says the Romanian Times. According to her lawyer, Simona Luciana Parvu, Carstea accepts her guilt to a certain degree and profoundly regrets the dreadful tragedy. She says that she wasn't EVER at the St Mary's celebration (even says that there wasn't one - see Hotnews). At the onset of those 12 controversial minutes,... [Lire la suite]

In a nutshell

To watch absolutely: In memorium ingerasilor de la maternitatea Giulesti... heartbreaking... And this video from Pro-TV - a reconstruction of events... the burnt out incubators and those tiny little fingers and toes... I wonder what the point is of such a reconstruction, which will cost 60,000 euros? We know how the fire started, where, why it was allowed to go berserk and what went wrong. How analysing calcified machinery is going to lend something to the investigation, I cannot imagine. We also learn from Nine O'Clock that only 3... [Lire la suite]

Giulesti and the human error

Day 6 and there is less and less to be seen in the press (both international and Roumanian) regarding the tragedy at Giulesti Maternity Hospital. There is one article however, an opinion in the Bucharest Herald I'd like to share with you. This is written by 'Maxy' on the subject of and entitled 'Human Error': Over 90 per cent of aircraft accidents are caused by human error. We are used to hearing the verdict: ‘Human error!’ This shows we are all capable of mistakes in tense moments, even if we are well trained or highly... [Lire la suite]
