News on Ion B

Dear Everybody,

The story of Ion B (see this article from Hotnews) has really got my attention. Was the video shown on HBO portraying a helping hand or the real and dispicable profitting of an old man's artwork to benefit an art gallery owner? Well, it seems that Ion B is actually pretty well-known these days thanks to Dan Popescu, the guy who discovered him: his artwork is exhibited in Western Europe and even over here in the US. He is described as a contemporary of Warhol and I heard today from a reliable source that he lives happily in a studio and wants for nothing. Apparently, he also exhibited at the Fred Studio in London alongside other great and admirable artists from August to September of this year.

Here is what HBO says:

Ion Barladeanu was born in 1946 in the village Zapodeni, Vaslui county. He escaped from his native village at 20, and during the communist regime he tried all possible jobs. Starting in the Danube Delta, he worked as a docker in Constanta. In Bucharest he was a grave digger, wood cutter, guardian or simple worker at the People’s Palace. After 1989 he had marginal ways to earn his living, sorting, as a free lancer, the garbage of a block on Calea Mosilor. For more than 30 years, Ion Barladeanu selected and cut images from magazines and created more than 1 000 collages. From 2008, he has been represented by H’Art Gallery, and his works have started an international career, exhibited in London, Copenhagen, Basel, Paris.

See the Alexander Nanau video again - this time, it doesn't cut out every five seconds. I do so wish HBO would make a second part to their video,  for it leaves everything way up in the air and gives too much room for speculation. I'm so glad that this story has a happy ending! Hurrah!
